Stemming the Global Assault on Amphibians at Sustain What ∣ March 14, 2024

Longtime sustainability journalist Andy Revkin, herpetologist Karen Lips (University of Maryland), Amphibian Foundation co-founder Mark Mandica, and Frog Song author Megan Hollingsworth gathered for a live online discussion about efforts to protect amphibians as deadly fungi spread worldwide and climate and landscape changes squeeze remaining refuges for frogs, salamanders, and the rest. Karen Lips discussed production of the short documentary film THE WAITING in which she shares her research experience in Costa Rica and Panama discovering what would come to be known commonly as Bd chytrid fungus. Please note that the map illustration in Frog Song is by Rosemary Middlebrook. All of the other illustrations are by Bonnie Gordon-Lucas. Also, the graph that Meg refers to at the end of the conversation is specific to harlequin toad declines, “a prime example of a worst-case scenario of amphibian declines, with most species threatened with extinction.”
